Everyone loves a good superhero. From Superman and Batman to Ant-Man and The Green Hornet, they are always in the back of societies mind. They’re the physical and storied embodiment of the question “what if?” They are the ideal people that we wish we could be and the saviors of all of the worlds problems.

With superhero movies blowing up the box office every year, we decided to see if there were any video games to let you live out your superhero fantasies and accidentally trash cities in the fight for justice. Like most of the movies, we’re looking at you Green Lantern, the games don’t disappoint.

    DC Universe Online

    Some companies tried to make a MMO superhero game, but like every cheap knockoff superhero, they faded into obscurity. DC Universe Online was the only online game to reign supreme. Featuring dozens of your favorite DC characters and locales that we’re all familiar with, DC Universe online is as good as it gets for the superhero MMO. With its innovative battle system and host of missions and baddies, the game is action packed and one hell of a good time. It is the closest you’re going to get to being an actual superhero wandering the urban landscape for little old ladies being mugged and cats up a tree.

    Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Turtles in Time

    The list of the 10 best superhero video games ever. wouldn't be complete without Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle: Turtles in Time. This game is a classic for the SNES and Sega Genesis. It brought that amazing arcade brawler into your living room so you could scarf down pizza while you beat Shredder's minions to... shreds! The gameplay was fast and the controls were responsive. You could slash, toss, and blow up enemies with merry abandon. There were so many different levels that it always kept the game interesting. Add in the 2nd player to join in the fun and you have yourself one of the greatest superhero games of all time.

    The Amazing Spiderman

    Who wouldn’t want to be the web-slinging nerd from New York City? Peter Parker was one of the first superheroes to come from humble beginnings. That's why it is so easy for you to slip into his boots and swing all throughout NYC righting wrongs and catching bad guys in your web of justice. The ability to roam freely throughout the city, thrashing enemies along the way provides some insanely fun gameplay. The controls work well when flipping Spidey into some fantastic and brutal acrobatics. You can live out all your fantasies of beating up the bullies that laughed at you for wearing a unitard. That's why Spider-man fights crime right, for truth, justice, and the spandex way?

    X-Men Origins: Wolverine

    Who would have thought that another movie game would make it onto our list of the 10 best superhero video games ever? We certainly didn't, but then again production on this game began before the movie was even made. X-Men Origins: Wolverine is a taught and brutal game that lest you really know how it field to wield the raw power of that adamantium-boned mutant. You get to hack and slash with happy abandon through hundreds of silly humans that think they can take you on. Poor non-mutants, fighting is for super beings.

    Marvel Ultimate Alliance

    This game has one hell of a name to live up to. Marvel Ultimate Alliance certainly delivers the good. No other game offers you the chance to control a team of the greatest superheroes ever assembled in one game. Not only do you get to team up the Marvel heavy hitters like Spiderman and Thor, but even the lesser heroes get in on the action. It is also the only superhero action-rpg that you'll want to play.

    Marvel Vs. Capcom

    It is amazing that that there are not more superhero fighting games. Seriously, all they do is fight in the comics and movies. The Marvel vs. Capcom games stand as the gold standard for superhero fighters. It has tight controls, fast gameplay, and a combo list that is out of this world. You get to see your favorite video game and comics characters duke it out right on your TV screen. It is a game that is best enjoyed with a friend on the couch next to you. It is the best superhero fighter period, at least until Injustice comes out, then there might be usurper to that throne.

    Spider-Man 2

    You all remember when Sam Raimi's Spider-Man movies were the only superhero offering at the box office. For an even longer time, Spider-Man 2 was the only worthwhile super hero game you could find. And it was spectacular. It took the open world of New York and made it your playground. It was a game that paved the way for every other superhero game after it. It was groundbreaking and immensely entertaining. It surely belongs swinging from our list of the 10 best superhero video games ever.

    Infamous 2

    Our list isn't limited to superheroes born of the comic panel, oh no. Infamous introduced us to the electrified errand boy Cole McGrath, but after his first adventure, which was just a prelude, we knew his games belonged in the pantheon of the 10 best superhero video games Ever. Infamous 2 is the culmination of everything Insomniac learned making the first game. The controls were better, the graphics were sharper, and the stakes were even higher. Infamous 2 is a spectacular superhero game that gives you a choice. Which is great, because who likes being good all the time? Certainly not us.

    Batman: Arkham Asylum

    Batman games weren't held in very high regard before Arkham Asylum was released. In fact, there weren't that many superhero games held in such high regard until this game made it into our consoles. It was not only one of the 10 best superhero games ever, but one of the greatest video games ever made. Finally, you could jump into Batman's suit and work your way through the mystery and action of a great story that felt like it was ripped right from Batman: The Animated series. It should feel that way since show creator Paul Dini was brought on to write the game. The combat was spectacularly fast and ferocious, the game looked like no other, and the story kept your attention rapt. It was everything you wanted from a Batman game until...

    Batman: Arkham City

    That's right, Batman: Arkham City is at the top of our list of the 10 Best Superhero Games Ever. It took everything that was done right in Arkham Asylum and made it better. It made the fighting more focused while adding to the Caped Crusader's utility belt of features. You now had a whole section of Gotham to explore. Sure, it was the worst section, but where else were you going to find a bunch of squishy henchmen to beat into an unconscious pulp? Soaring over the lights of the city with your cape, you could really feel what it was like to be Batman, and that is what ever superhero game should do. Put you in the boots of your favorite characters.
