It’s 2:50 AM, and the dive bar that you've been hulling up in trying to pick up on the ladies by masquerading as an up-and-coming musician is about to close. While your 1980 Ford Pinto is patiently waiting for you in the parking lot, there is a distinct possibility that you’ve had a few too many beverages to even consider saddling up for a late night journey home – alone, of course.

Even though the sad and pathetic truth is that you’ve just wasted an entire evening (and a weeks pay) failing at the art of drunken seduction, your night could be about to get worse, if you're too drunk to realize you shouldn't drive, and reach for your keys.

Enter Alcohoot, the new iPhone app that allows users to check their blood alcohol content within a hundredth of a percent, to ensure that you're well within the legal limit to drive. If the numbers tell you that you're too plowed, Alcohoot can assist in either calling for a cab service or finding the nearest place to grab some food while you wait to sober up.

Alcohoot connects a police grade breathalyzer to your iPhone and not only measures blood alcohol content, but also logs it so that a user can determine and plan a safe and sober departure time. The connection device currently costs around $99 but creators hope to be able to bring the cost down substantially once the Alcohoot becomes popular.

Truth be told, anything under $100 is a bargain. These days a DUI can set you back  around $10,000.
