Can You Identify This Awesome Ride?

This morning, en route to the bakery for my usual breakfast of seven glazed donuts and a Diet Shasta, I spotted this awesome little ride and had to snap some pics.

The car was in pristine condition and the engine sparkled in the morning sun. The novelty Nevada state license plate LOSER made me chuckle. This ride, and its owner, are anything but unlucky although I didn't stick around to see who pulled away in this modified purple machine. He could very well be a loser in everything except personal transportation.

Here is the problem -- I've got no idea the make, model or year because I'm clueless about cars.  I'm asking for audience input. Anyone out there know anything about the history of this type of car?
