Cat Power's newest record, 'Sun' hit the shelves this week, and we're crushing hard.

Charlyn Marie Marshall is this Atlanta, GA native's given name, but under the stage name Cat Power she has made quite a name for herself as a singer/songwriter, actress and model. As a child, she was not allowed to buy records, and so she grew up listening to her stepfather's -  Otis Redding, The Rolling Stones, and Creedence Clearwater Revival. You can hear the influence of each one of these legends in her bluesy, powerful vocals.

Marshall is renowned for her emotional performances: Slugging from a bottle of JD on stage, resting her head on the piano at the conclusion of a powerful song, or sometimes leaving the stage completely. Like her music, she is raw and volatile, which is what makes her so beloved by her fans. In a recent cover story in Pitchfork, Amanda Petrusich defends her intentionality:

"For an artists who so often gets portrayed as emotionally precarious, Marshall is a tough custodian of her own work."

Her grunge-inspired look has made her a muse for fashion designers and photographers alike, and she was named in Maxim's 100 Hot Women of 2009, ranking at #19.

Marshall is beautiful, talented, and fiercely individual - How could we not love her?
