Most parents send their kids off to college with school supplies, a little spending money and stupid advice like 'make friends' and 'go to class.' Most parents are not Charles Dickens. He made sure his son had a steady supply of booze at school-- more than 100 bottles, in fact.

Letters between Dickens and his son Henry reveal that when Henry went up to Cambridge more than a century ago, Papa arranged for "3 Doz Sherry, 2 Doz Port and 3 Doz light claret to be sent" to him.

And that wasn't all -- he also wrote that "6 bottles of brandy" were pending, too. Apparently the elder Dickens thought the hootch would help in Henry's studies, and since keggers weren't all that common in 1800s-era England, he did the next best thing.

Guess what? It worked. Henry graduated in 1872 and went on to a successful law career. He probably also had a ton of friends and got laid a lot. Purely speculation on our part.

That Dickens sure knew how to write a happy ending.
