"Is Crossfit a good way to train to get into summer shape?" - Derek, 24, Cincinnati

I think Crossfit is a good way to train for the average person who is not an athlete with specific needs. The nice thing about it is that it is a great way to incorporate both cardio and weight training. Most "boxes," as they are called, have beginner to advanced class situations, so they can cover a wide spectrum of individual goals.

Also great: If you are unable to get to a Crossfit gym on a regular basis, you can train at home and still keep up. They provide a W.O.D. (Workout of the Day) which is all planned out for you, so there's no guesswork. Many people like that, because your workout is all set up for you, and most boxes have instructors working with you to show you proper technique.

The downfall for many guys is that they do not have a program geared toward bodybuilding, which many men may desire. With that said, the gym is co-ed, and most of the female athletes are in pretty good shape. Several are in very good shape.

If you are just looking to start a regular fitness regimen, I think Crossfit is a good choice. If you are looking to become a bodybuilder, power-lifter, or a  strongman, then don't go to Crossfit -- you'll get too much cardio, and not enough strength-training. Crossfit is similar to some other fitness programs, but offers far more structure and support. All in all, if you are just wanting to get in shape I think it's a good choice.
