New Facebook Messenger App Update Scares The Hell Out Of Us
The best and worst aspect of email and instant messaging is that they make it easy to blow people off and give you at least a glimmer of hope that your recipient hasn't seen your unreturned messages. Now Facebook wants to zap all the uncertainty away, updating the Facebook Messenger app so message-senders will be able to tell that recipients have seen messages.
TechCrunch analyzes the update, which seems like a high-five to obsessive "friends" who can't take the hint. Another new feature allows you to overshare about how and where you're sending your message, letting you opt in to revealing the info. The "seen by" feature is mandatory.
Before you allow the app to auto-update, make sure you're cool with your ex and your girlfriend's friend's brother who's always asking you to score him a job knowing exactly when you've read the nonsense they've spewed your way.
If any good can come from this, it's that annoying people will at least be able to take comfort in the fact that you're an inconsiderate jerk and no longer feel the need to send you a dozen follow-ups.
Facebook is yet to comment on leaked screenshots that show they may soon add video chat to its Messenger apps. Weird, because Facebook is usually so upfront about all the things they are doing behind the scenes. We'll have to message them and wait for a response. At least we'll know they've seen it.
