Ubisoft has just announced that Ghost Recon: Future Soldier has gone Gold with a release date of May 22nd. The latest installment of the popular Tom Clancy franchise sees you joining an elite Ghost Recon squad which is now beefed up with the latest in high-tech military weaponry, some of which only exists in prototype form at this stage.

That's right, if the title of the game wasn't obvious enough you're going to have some futuristic weaponry here, much like in Call of Duty: Black Ops II. Tony Key, Ubisoft's senior vice president of sales and marketing, harped on the similarity in a press release- "While one of our competitors recently revealed plans to imitate our game’s future technology for their release in the fall, we’re proud to be bringing Ghost Recon: Future Soldier to retail this month." Bitter much?

They don't need to be so defensive- Ghost Recon has always been a solid series, and this one features a co-op campaign that has you tracking the source of a dirty bomb that took out the original Ghost team. Besides the fancy new weapons you'll find lots of nifty gadgets to toy around with, like optical camouflage and the War Hound, a heavy walking mech that's similar to BigDog.

Gamers interested in picking up the title might also be interested in picking up Ghost Recon Alpha, a 25-minute prequel film to the game. As you can see from the trailer above it's a live-action short that will be hitting the same day as the game, May 22nd, and will be available in a DVD/Blu-Ray combo pack for $14.95 or just a DVD for $7.95.

Is that too much for what's essentially marketing for the film, or do you think you'll pick it up along with the game? Let us know in the comments below!
