Loyola Marymount University star Hank Gathers, leading the nation at the time in scoring and rebounding, collapsed and died during a game in 1990. He was known to have an abnormal heartbeat, but Gathers opted not to take his medication for the condition. His death at 23 years of age rocked college basketball.

Perhaps most famous to sports fans was what happened after Gathers' death. As the #11 seed in the NCAA tournament that season, Loyola made an improbable run to the Elite Eight. Gathers's teammate and best friend, Bo Kimble, famously attempted a free throw with his opposite hand in memory of Gathers in a game against UNLV. Kimble made the shot.
