‘Hot Tub Time Machine 2′ Being Talked Up

Hot Tub Time Machine
MGM

Though the film was not the runaway hit hoped for when released in 2010, ‘Hot Tub Time Machine’ has proved popular enough on home video that MGM is exploring making a sequel to the time-travel comedy. And right now they’re talking to everyone but star John Cusack.

This comes from The Hollywood Reporter, who note that director Steve Pink and stars Rob Corddry, Craig Robinson and Clark Duke have all been approached while Cusack has not. In the scheme of things this makes sense as Cusack was the anchor of the first film, which – like Cusack’s earlier films ‘Grosse Pointe Blank’ and ‘High Fidelity’ – played partly on the concept of Cusack as an 80′s leading man. Without him in the mix, the cast could have more fun, though it also suggests something that could go straight to video. But at this point Cusack’s films are close to going straight to video anyway, so he’s no great help to the project whether he comes back or not.

The first film played both on 80′s conventions and time-travel movies, so perhaps with the sequel they will tackle the cliches of the 90′s teen cinema or perhaps — with a time machine — it could somehow be a prequel. According to THR, if the pieces fall into place, expect this to begin production as soon as possible with a likely 2014 release date.
