Jake's wife recently put on a good amount of weight now that she’s breastfeeding their newborn. He’s not finding her as attractive as he used to. Is there any way he can convince her to lose some of the pregnancy weight?

Dr. Fisch’s advice:

This is a tough topic. You're obviously not attracted to your wife, and you’re afraid the weight gain’s only going to get more severe as time goes on. It’s important to understand what happens to a woman when she breastfeeds. She tends to put on a lot of weight in the hips. This is because they have to produce a large amount of breast milk for the baby and this requires her to store a larger fat content in her body.

If she’s picked up a dozen pounds or so, but her mother’s not heavy, then I wouldn’t be too concerned. Once she’s done breastfeeding, most of this weight will probably come off. Don’t tell her she’s fat! The best thing you can do is support her by showing her empathy and focusing on the features you do find attractive. Suggest the two of you workout together when she’s able to hit the treadmill regularly again.

As long as you’re there for her, she’ll want to take the fat off.
