Kinect Has Almost Outsold the Original Xbox

Xbox Kinect

The latest lifetime sales numbers for the Xbox 360 and Kinect show just how far gaming has come in the past decade.

The original Xbox sold roughly 25 million units during its lifetime. The Xbox 360 has already tripled that number, moving 76 million consoles since 2006. Though the Kinect hasn’t been around nearly as long as the Xbox 360 itself, it too has moved some impressive numbers. In fact, there have been almost as many Kinects sold (24 million), as the original Xbox.

Those numbers also led to some steady growth when it came to Xbox Live. According to Microsoft, there are now 46 million members on Xbox Live, and the service has grown 15 percent since 2011. The shift to more streaming media on the console has also led to some startling numbers, with those 46 million people using entertainment apps for 18 billion hours.

The average XBL Gold member used entertainment apps (Netflix, Hulu, Xbox Music), for 87 hours a month in 2012, which was a 10 percent jump over 2011. “We believe that Xbox is being used by more people in the household, during more hours in the day and for more forms of entertainment,” said Yusuf Mehdi, corporate vice president of Microsoft’s Interactive Entertainment Business. “People are using Xbox in the morning to work out with the Kinect Nike+ Fitness program, kids are watching cartoons, families are enjoying movies, and of course people are playing blockbuster games like Halo 4.”
