MGMT Releasing New Album in June, Not Trying to Make Music ‘Everyone Understands’

MGMT plan to release the follow-up to 2010's left-of-center 'Congratulations' this June. The group, which consists of Andrew VanWyngarden and Ben Goldwasser, acknowledges that 'Congratulations' was a shock to fans and their label after the breakthrough track 'Kids' from 2007's 'Oracular Spectacular.' It doesn't appear that they will be returning to the 'Kids' formula, though.

"People thought we took too many drugs, which was not the case at all," Goldwasser told Rolling Stone about 'Congratulations,' while VanWyngarden chalked it up to learning, saying, "We were less naive after 'Congratulations.'"

It sounds as though their third album will be even more strange than their second. The duo recorded alone, instead of with a live band. They picked the best parts of their jam sessions to create tracks that are influenced by what they've been listening to, which is admittedly a lot of Aphex Twin and house music.

"We're not trying to make music that everyone understands the first time they hear it," Goldwasser said. VanWyndgarden also dismissed the notion that the MGMT's label Columbia pressured them to turn in something more accessible aka a hit.

"There's no illusion on their part that we're going to turn into a Top 40 band," says VanWyngarden. "That's kind of comforting."
