Running back Steven Jackson and defensive end Cliff Avril were among the NFL free agents who agreed to terms with new teams in the second 24 hours of the NFL’s 2013 free agency period. Former Detroit Lions’ DE Avril agreed to a two-year, $15 million deal with the Seattle Seahawks late Wednesday, while Jackson left the St. Louis Rams for a three-year contract with the Atlanta Falcons on Thursday.

Jackson, 29, who ran for 10,135 yards and 56 touchdowns in nine seasons with St. Louis, was the second significant offensive player to leave the team in two days. Rams wide receiver Danny Amendola agreed to a five-year, $31 million deal with the New England Patriots on Wednesday.

In other offensive player news, the Minnesota Vikings inked quarterback Matt Cassel on Thursday after he was released by the Kansas City Chiefs earlier in the day.

Notable defensive signings included safety LaRon Landry, who left the New York Jets for a four-year, $24 million contract with the Indianapolis Colts; former Jacksonville Jaguars cornerback Derek Cox signed a new contract with the San Diego Chargers, and former Pittsburgh Steelers cornerback Keenan Lewis returned to his home city of New Orleans to sign a deal with the Saints.

Former Philadelphia Eagles cornerback Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie signed a one-year deal with the Denver Broncos. The Eagles signed Kenny Phillips of the New York Giants and Cary Williams of the Baltimore Ravens to help fill the void in their secondary left by the departure of Rodgers-Cromartie and the release of Nnamdi Asomugha earlier this week.

There were still many veteran defenders who had yet to sign deals late Thursday, including Ravens safety Ed Reed, Colts defensive end Dwight Freeney, Giants defensive end Osi Umenyiora and Bears linebacker Brian Urlacher.

Green Bay Packers’ wide receiver Greg Jennings and Miami Dolphins tackle Jake Long were the most coveted offensive names still available.
