James Southerland scored 16 points, and fourth-seeded Syracuse used its defense to beat third-seeded Marquette, 55-39, in the 2013 NCAA tournament’s East Regional final in Washington, D.C. on Saturday. With the victory, the Orange advanced to the 2013 Final Four in Atlanta next Saturday. It’s the program’s first trip to the national semifinals since 2003, when the school won the national title.

Vander Blue and Davante Gardner scored 14 points apiece for the Golden Eagles, who could not solve Syracuse’s 2-3 zone defense. Marquette shot just 23 percent from the floor, including 12 percent (3-of-25) from 3-point range. The Golden Eagles also lost the turnover battle 13-6.
