Terms of Endearment — 10 Films With Lousy First Dates

Participants: Aurora (Shirley MacClaine), an uptight older woman; and Garrett Breedlove (Jack Nicholson), a retired astronaut, and Aurora's neighbor.

Circumstances: Aurora takes it upon herself to finally acquiesce to a lunch date Garrett had proposed years before, so she finds herself speeding along the highway in Garrett's Corvette convertible.

What Makes It Awful? First she loses her shawl flying down the road, then he offers her an oyster which she looks at with supreme disdain. Then she accuses him of looking at other women in the restaurant. At first, she also refuses to drink, which brings us to one of Nicholson's most infamous line readings: "You need a lot of drinks … to kill the bug that you have up your ASS!"

Outcome: They end up speeding down the beach (!?) with Nicholson sitting up out of the seat and weaving the car around with his feet, right up until Aurora slams the brakes and sends him hurtling out into the surf. As you can imagine, all of this serves to, in fact, vanquish the aforementioned insect, and Aurora falls for her gentleman caller in a big, big way.
