This Falls Church, VA native first picked up a guitar when she was 12 years old, and was performing in a pop country duo by the time she was in high school.

All through her 20s she toured extensively, releasing several highly-celebrated albums under the name 'Thao and the Get Down Stay Down.' She has collaborated with artists like Andrew Bird, Mirah, Laura Viers and producer Tucker Martine.  She also toured with NPR's 'Radiolab' show.

After her touring days had come to an end, she settled in San Fran, and spent time working with inmates at the SF county jail and CA state prison system, which proved to be a transformative experience in her life, as well as her music.

Post prison work, Thao went back to the studio to record 'We the Common,' a 12-song album of raw, homemade goodness. We can't get enough.
