st round draft pick party” in New York City even though most draft analysts pegged him as a likely second day pick. Late Wednesday, Mathieu came to his senses and
canceled the party. In the end, the Honey Badger did care.

Mathieu was a star cornerback and return man during LSU’s run to the national title game in 2011. He was a Heisman finalist and won the Chuck Bednarik Award, which is given to the best defensive player in college football. But after that season, his football career took a hard turn. After several off-field problems and failed drug tests, LSU coach Les Miles kicked Mathieu off the LSU team in August 2012. Mathieu announced in November that he would enter the 2013 NFL draft.

Nobody doubts Matheiu’s athletic ability, but his relatively small size (5’9”) and well-known drug problems are big question marks for NFL scouts. But that didn’t stop the Honey Badger from posting an invite to his "1st round pick" party on Twitter and his Instagram account. Most draft projections showed Matheiu going in the late-second or third round.

Perhaps all the online chat about the folly of a second- or third-round pick having a first-round party was enough to humble Matheiu, but it may just serve to motivate him this fall.
