Has The CW’s New Wonder Woman Series Completely Changed the Character?

The CW Wonder Woman Amazon
DC Comics

Given the breakaway success of The CW’s ‘Arrow,’ it’s not hard to believe that the network might be eager to get its ducks in a row for the potential forthcoming Wonder Woman pilot ‘Amazon.’ Yesterday we heard that Warner Bros. might be looking to get a jump on casting the titular heroine for one reason or another, but are you ready to see what The CW has in mind? Does ‘Amazon’ feature Wonder Woman as we know her, or someone else altogether?

Any comic book character will face a modicum of changes when it comes to adapting the material for the big and small screen alike, as we’ve especially seen with The CW’s recent Green Arrow adaption ‘Arrow.’ In some cases, production tones down the more fantastical elements to work under budget, others with more specific goals. For The CW’s upcoming Wonder Woman adaptation ‘Amazon’ however, has writer Allan Heinberg changed the character altogether?

We knew that ‘Amazon’ would focus on the superheroine in her younger days, but the latest casting slip from Deadline suggests she might have a different backstory, even changing the character’s name from “Diana” to “Iris” as well!

She comes from a remote, secluded country and until now has spent most of her life as a soldier and a leader on the battlefield. Because of relentless brutality of her life at home, Iris looks at our world with absolute awe and astonishment. She’s delighted and just as often horrified by the aspects of everyday life that we take for granted: skyscrapers, traffic, ice cream. It’s all new and fascinating and sometimes slightly troubling to her.

Iris is completely unschooled in our world, our culture, our customs. And she’s completely inexperienced at interpersonal relationships. She has no social filter, does not suffer fools, and tends to do and say exactly what’s on her mind at all times. She’s bluntly, refreshingly honest. She can tell when you’re lying to her. And she doesn’t have time or patience for politics or tact because she’s too busy trying to experience everything our world has to offer.

There are too many sights to see and things to learn and people to care for. Hers is a true, noble, and generous heart. And she will fight and die for the people she loves. Iris is a fierce warrior with the innocent heart of a romantic and she will fight to the death to make the world safe for innocents and true romantics everywhere.

As previously mentioned, Warner Bros. has begun the process of casting the title character before The CW has officially ordered a pilot episode, which could either be a vote of confidence or an early measure to secure good casting.

What do you think?  Could you stand to watch Wonder Woman as The CW’s ‘Amazon,’ even if the character had a different name? Might their be some other explanation for “Iris?”
