No. 99: Mortal Kombat – 100 Greatest Games Ever
It took 19 years for the Mortal Kombat series to finally realize they needed to add a bit of gameplay to their delicious violence, but it was definitely worth it.
Twenty seven characters means for a lot of replay value and the fighting system (now with combos and everything!) allows for more brutality than ever. Characters take damage to all parts of their body over time and the finishing moves show what happens to the inside of the poor victims as bones get pulverized and organs splatter.
Add an insane amount of unlockable content and you've got not only the best in the series but one of the best fighting games ever made.
