5 Absolutely Ridiculous Doughnut Sandwiches That You Should Totally Try
The only thing better than a doughnut is two doughnuts holding bacon and a fried egg, so Dunkin’ Donuts announced that it will begin offering its Dunkin’ Donuts Glazed Donut Breakfast Sandwich nationwide starting June 7. The move is meant to coincide with National Donut Day, which is somehow still not a national holiday.
While Dunkin Donuts will be the largest restaurant to offer a sandwich using doughnuts as bread, it's not even close to being the first or the most visionary. We found five even more completely absurd sandwiches made with doughnuts. Check them out below:
Monte Cristo Donut
The Glazed Gourmet in Charleston, South Carolina might be heaven. What else would you call an establishment that creates the Monte Cristo Donut: a heavenly blend of ham, cheese and strawberry jam melted between two doughnuts and covered with powdered sugar? The good news: Charleston has an airport. What are you waiting for? Book those tickets.
Krispy Kreme Burger
Pretty much the gold standard in doughnut sandwiches, the Krispy Kreme Burger (known to some as the Luther Burger after late R&B star Luther Vandross) is exactly as it sounds: a cheeseburger pressed between two, fresh glazed Krispy Kreme doughnuts. Several restaurants have offered the 1,000-plus calorie donut concoction, including minor league baseball's Gateway Grizzlies and PYT in Philadelphia. You can probably even make your own Krispy Kreme Burger. Think of it as the tastiest way to slowly stop your heart.
Grilled Cheese Donut
ZOMG! Why, why, why didn't someone think of this sooner? Cincinnati's Tom + Chee conceived the simple, but absolutely genius, creation of slicing a glazed doughnut, putting cheese between the halves and grilling it. This is what would happen if parents let kids plan a lunch menu. Even better, the Grilled Cheese Donuts are available at half-price on Wednesdays.
Donut Ham & Cheese
Slightly different than the Monte Cristo Donut, but not the slightest bit less tasty, San Francisco restaurant Pal's offers a doughnut sandwich made from a cornmeal cherry doughnut sliced and stuffed with ham, Cotswold cheese and jicama slaw. Sorry, we just salivated all over the keyboard.
Lady's Brunch Burger
The reigning queen of comfort food, Paula Deen, offers up the Lady's Brunch Burger — bacon, cheese, burger and an English muffin inside a glazed doughnut. You can make it at home, or better still, demand the chef at a classy restaurant make one for you. Show the country club set who is boss.
