Jessica Simpson is an American recording artist, actress, television personality, and fashion designer who rose to fame as a singer but became a popular reality television star on the MTV show 'Newlyweds: Nick and Jessica,' which she co-starred opposite her then husband Nick Lachey.

Jessica Simpson (Jessica Ann Simpson) was born July 10, 1980 in Abilene, Texas. She has a younger sister Ashlee, who is also a musician and reality television star. Simpson began singing at her local church, where her father was a minister. She auditioned, albeit unsuccessfully, for 'The Mickey Mouse Club' when she was 12. While attending church camp, a gospel record label owner was impressed with Simpson's voice and signed her. Still attending high school, Simpson recorded an album titled 'Jessica,' but the label went bankrupt and the album was never officially released except for a small pressing funded by her grandmother. Despite the limited copies, her album still managed to get Simpson some attention and as word spread of her talents, Simpson performed at concerts with other gospel singers such as Kirk Franklin, God's Property, and CeCe Winans.

It was only when Columbia Records executive Tommy Mottola heard 'Jessica,' that the then 16-year-old Simpson got her big break. Mottola was impressed with Simpson’s musical talent and was immediately signed to the label. Simpson released her first single "I Wanna Love You Forever" in 1999 and rode the teen-pop wave alongside her peers Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera. Simpson released four multi-platinum under Columbia Records, with her last being a Christmas Album.

At the time, Simpson was also dating 98 Degrees member Nick Lachey, and the couple married on October 26, 2002. The following year, Simpson and Lachey appeared on a new MTV reality show called 'Newlyweds: Nick and Jessica' which followed their lives soon after marriage. The show was a hit and made the couple household names, especially Simpson, whose antics on the show played on the "dumb blonde" stereotype. 'Newlyweds' ran for three seasons until 2005, as Simpson and Lachey would file for divorce in December that year.

Simpson continued to release music albums under the label Epic, and has collectively sold over 30 million records. She also made appearances in a few films, including 'Employee of the Month' and 'The Dukes of Hazzard,' in which she played the role of Daisy Duke - her first movie role.

Simpson has dealt with a fair share of criticism, especially when she dated Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo. Cowboys fans blamed Simpson for Romo's poor performance on the field, with even then-president George W Bush jokingly endorsing the "Jessica jinx". Simpson is currently engaged to former NFL player Eric Johnson, and the couple are expecting their first child. She is currently a mentor on the NBC reality show 'Fashion Star'.
