Nicki Minaj (Onika Tanya Maraj) was born on December 8, 1982 in Saint James, Trinidad and Tobago. When Minaj was five years old, she moved with her mother to Queens, New York. Minaj later learned her father drank heavily, took drugs, and once tried to kill her mother by setting the house on fire. In middle school, she played the clarinet and once Minaj got into LaGuardia High School, she focused on music and performing arts.

Beginning 2007, Minaj released mixtapes which helped her gain an underground fanbase. She won the Female Artist of the Year award at the 2008 Underground Music Awards and by 2009, Minaj started to receive coverage on BET and MTV. In August 2009, rapper Lil Wayne discovered Minaj and helped her secure a record deal with Young Money Entertainment, with distribution from Universal Motown Records. After featuring on two Lil Wayne tracks, Minaj was then chosen by Mariah Carey to be featured on her single and music video for "Up Out My Face".

In 2010, Minaj released her debut studio album 'Pink Friday,' which spawned seven singles including the hugely popular hits "Check It Out" featuring will.i.am and "Super Bass," now one of Minaj's signature songs. 'Pink Friday' would go on to sell over 1.75 million copies in the United States. Minaj would also become a favorite among artists, like Rihanna, for collaborations. In November 2011, Minaj announced her second studio album, 'Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded,' with a release date set for April 3, 2012.
