Scarlett Johansson Bio
Scarlett Johansson was born in New York City on November 22, 1984. Her father, Karsten Johansson, is a Danish-born architect, while her mother, Melanie Sloan, her manager, comes from a Jewish family from the Bronx. During her childhood, her mother started taking Johansson to auditions and by 1994, she made her film debut at nine years old. Johansson's first film was the comedy 'North,' starring as the daughter of John Ritter's character. The following year, she appeared in the Sean Connery film 'Just Cause' and in 1996, appeared in two movies - 'If Lucy Fell' and 'Manny & Lo'. Her performance in 'Manny & Lo' received much critical praise and a nomination for the Independent Spirit Award for Best Lead Female.
Following minor roles in 1997, Johansson was in the spotlight again for her performance in the 1998 film 'The Horse Whisperer,' directed by and starring Robert Redford. She would go on to appear in more films towards the end of the decade and even appeared in the music video for the song "Candy" by debut teen singer Mandy Moore. In 2001, Johansson received multiple award nominations for her role in 'Ghost World,' for which she won the Toronto Film Critics Association Awards for Best Supporting Actress. In 2003, despite being 18, Johansson made the transition from teen roles to adult roles with the Sofia Coppola film 'Lost in Translation,' in which she played a 25-year-old abandoned wife. The critically acclaimed film was a favorite during awards season and Johansson won the BAFTA Award for Best Actress for her performance.
Johansson's breakthrough performance ushered in a new era of stardom and made her a hot commodity in Hollywood. In June 2004, Johansson received an invitation to join the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. She also became a sex symbol with magazines like FHM naming her their 'Sexiest Woman Alive' and Maxim ranking her high on their Hot 100 lists. Johansson would go on to appear in films such as 'In Good company' and the Michael Bay-directed 'The Island,' but 2005 marked the begging of her connection with legendary director Woody Allen. Johansson would appear in three of Allen's films - 'Match Point' (2005), 'Scoop' (2006) and 'Vicky Christina Barcelona' (2008) - the latter of which was both a critical and commercial success.
Johansson's other notable films include 'The Prestige,' 'Iron Man 2,' 'We Bought a Zoo' and 'The Avengers'. She has also recorded an album, sung on many of her film's soundtracks and appeared in Justin Timberlake's music video for "What Goes Around... Comes Around".
