Daniel, 32, has been having migraine headaches 2 to 5 times a week for the past two years. His migraines are hindering his life. He’s generally healthy, although he says he drinks too much.  He’s seen a doctor who gave him medication that didn’t help. The migraines hit him in the front of his head and they keep him from being able to concentrate or sleep.

Is there anything Daniel can do? Dr. Fisch’s advice:

First of all, you need to cut back on the alcohol. Alcohol can aggravate your migraines and is unhealthy for many other reasons. But, to get to the migraines alone, I know you want to go down the “natural” route, but drinking some special juice isn’t going to make your migraines go away.

There are many reasons why people have migraines. In my experience as a urologist, I’ve treated a number of men for migraines. Migraines are less common in men than in women; women tend to get migraines when they experience changes in their hormones as they get older. What I’ve seen is migraines occurring in men with low testosterone.

It’s impossible to go through life with migraines. Go back to your doctor to get your testosterone level checked. I’d bet you have low testosterone. Your migraines might actually go away if you get testosterone treatment. A man’s testosterone should be in the 300 to 1200 range. It wouldn’t surprised me if you’re below 300. I want you at around 600.

I've treated men with low testosterone and given them a testosterone replacement. They come back to see me a month later and say, “I feel great, I have more energy, and my migraines have disappeared.”
