A Kansas man proved oddsmakers' cliched claims to be correct when he bought lottery tickets for the $656 million Mega Millions jackpot on Friday and then was struck by lightning shortly before the drawing. He was, however, not one of the three players to win the jackpot.

Bill Isles, 48, of Wichita, Kan., bought three tickets in hopes of winning the record-setting jackpot on Friday. Isles said he commented to a friend while on the way home after buying his tickets:

"I've got a better chance of getting struck by lightning" than winning the lottery."

Karma, apparently, has its own voice-recognition software these days.

At 9:30 p.m., Isles, who is a volunteer weather spotter for the National Weather Service, was in his back yard observing an approaching storm when he saw a flash and was struck.

"It threw me to the ground quivering," Isles said. "It kind of scrambled my brain and gave me an irregular heartbeat."

Isles was taken to a local hospital and held overnight for observation. No word on wether or not medical personnel taped his yap shut so he couldn't double-down by saying: "What are the chances that will ever happen again?"

Lottery officials said that the odds of winning the Friday jackpot were about 176 million to one, while the National Weather Service estimated one in 775,000 Americans is susceptible to a lightning strike.
