Participants: Alvy (Woody Allen), a writer; and Annie (Diane Keaton), a well-dressed goof from Wisconsin.

Circumstances: They meet through mutual friends at a tennis court for mixed doubles. One awkward thing leads to another and before too long, Annie offers Alvy a ride home in her VW convertible bug.

What Makes It Awful? For one thing, Annie is a horrific driver. For another, she actually makes a Woody Allen character seem like a bastion of secure temperament. Nervous, talking to herself, constantly second-guessing her every gesture and utterance (though we, like Alvy, are far more charmed than repulsed), Annie is nothing if not forthright and complicated. She also informs him that her Grammy would call him a "real Jew" whatever that might mean. They drink warm white wine on her deck, and babble on about photography while thinking of completely different things (He: "I wonder what she looks like naked?" She: "I hope he's not a schmuck like all the others.")

Outcome: Naturally, they begin a long and fruitful relationship that ends in sadness, degradation and Alvy trying to drive a car very unsuccessfully in L.A. in order to get her back. He doesn't.
