Proof that not every RPG had to have a fantasy setting, the epic science fiction of Phantasy Star (despite its deceptive title) set a new precedent for the genre. As the first 6-megabit cartridge ever made (as it proudly displayed on the cover) it retailed for a staggering $69. With 30 hours of gameplay, though, it worked out in our favor.

Superior to the first in every respect and with such a compelling and mature story that the sequels couldn't hope to touch it, it stands up among the finest role-playing games ever made. Even with the irritating random battles, the addictive combat is just as compelling today.

But what a shame the series has gone off into online territory, because clearly we could always use another genuine Phantasy Star title.
